10 good reasons for choosing Vertical Axis Wind Turbines VAWT rather than Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines (HAWT)
- Global simplicity of the machine and thus, better reliability.
- Rotor design more simple and more reliable (the blades give a better output.
- Simplified mechanical system (no orientation system).
- The wind direction has no effect on the aerodynamic output.
- Easy and low cost maintenance.
- Lower cost per installed kW.
- Manufacturing process easily adjustable for an industrial production, especially the blades which are two-D instead of three (non twisted, with constant chord).
- The total height of a VAWT is lower than for a HAWT since tip speed ratio has no influence on the rotor.
- The peripheral speeds of the blades on VAWT are lower and generate therefore less noise than the blades on HAWT.
- The VAWT can be integrated in an urban environment : they can be installed on existing structures or on tubular masts (towers) for a better visual impact.
